Memorial Day is a holiday to remember those who have lost their lives serving in the Armed Forces. It has also become a day which unofficially marks the beginning of the summer season.
As such, Memorial Day has become a day many people choose to christen their new barbeques and crack open a few beers. Law enforcement was out in full force this last Memorial Day in anticipation of barbeque attendees who might be driving drunk.
In addition to an inundation of presence on the streets and highways, CHP also monitors the Memorial Day weekend beginning at 6:01pm on Friday and ending at 6am on Monday morning. CHP has reported an overall decline in DUIs and DUI fatalities during this year’s Memorial Day weekend as compared to last year’s.
According to CHP, there was only one fatality this year in Los Angeles. That fatality involved a woman who was thrown from a vehicle during a collision on the 110 Harbor freeway. Last year CHP recorded three fatalities in Los Angeles. Statewide, there were 11 recorded fatalities this year whereas last year saw 13 fatalities.
CHP arrested 258 drivers in Los Angeles on suspicion of DUI in 2012. In 2011, CHP recorded 298 arrests on suspicion of DUI. This is an approximate decline of 13.42%.
CHP arrested 60 drivers in Orange County on suspicion of DUI. This is up from last year’s 50 arrests.
Statewide, however, CHP arrested 1,161 people this year. Last year CHP arrested 1,223 people statewide. This is an approximate decline of 5.07% in DUI arrests statewide from last year.
