The Los Angeles Times is reporting that NBA veteran Lamar Odom was arrested early this morning on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Odom was stopped by the California Highway Patrol on the 101 freeway in the San Fernando Valley early Friday morning. CHP officials said that they spotted a white Mercedes SUV driving erratically at speeds of about 50 miles per hour.
When CHP attempted to pull Odom over, he didn’t initially stop. Instead he continued driving eastbound on the 101 freeway, passing Van Nuys Boulevard and Woodman Avenue. Odom eventually exited the Coldwater Canyon Boulevard off ramp and came to a stop.
According to a CHP report, Odom showed “objective signs of intoxication and was unable to perform field sobriety tests as explained and demonstrated.” He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and possibly drugs. Van Nuys jail records indicate that Odom was booked at 5:01am.
CHP also reported that, once at the Van Nuys jail, Odom refused all chemical tests.
He was released at 8:33am this morning.
Odom was recently in the headlines, not for his skills on the court, but rather amidst allegation of drug use. There were also reports that Odom went missing after a fight with his wife, Khloe Kardashian. Odom’s agent, Jeff Schwartz, told ESPN that the NBA free agent was not missing. A source told ESPN that Odom was at a Los Angeles hotel where friends were helping him with a drug problem.
Odom’s arrests comes at a time when driving under the influence seems to be prevalent amongst professional athletes, particularly NFL players. The NFL saw 10 players booked on alcohol related offenses this year and 17 booked last year. The recent surge in DUI arrests of professional football players has prompted the NFL to consider increased penalties and a league suspension following a DUI arrest.
Now, not only will Odom have to worry about dealing with the impending court case, but also whether an NBA team will offer him a contract after this.
