You can’t say I didn’t warn you. Law enforcement officers were out in full force throughout Southern California this past holiday weekend. And arrest they did.
In Los Angeles County 685 people were arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence during a 48 hour period from midnight on Thursday, Independence Day to midnight on the following Saturday. The preliminary data was released by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Sixteen people were killed in DUI related collisions over the holiday weekend in Los Angeles County.
The same period last year yielded 343 suspected DUI arrests, a mere half of that arrested in 2013.
As of July 9th, Orange County law enforcement officials made 240 during their “Avoid the 38” campaign conducted over the holiday weekend. The 38 refers to the 38 law enforcement agencies located in Orange County. This number may increase because, as of July 9th, not all law enforcement agencies had reported their numbers.
Last year’s “Avoid the 38” DUI crackdown yielded 78 suspected DUI arrests. The “Avoid the 38” period, however, lasted one day longer this year because the 4th landed on a Thursday.
This year, Orange County reported one fatality while last year, there were none.
California Highway Patrol reported 1,559 throughout California from 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3rd to 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 7th. During that same period, California Highway Patrol reported 56 traffic related fatalities statewide.
DUI crackdowns in Southern California never really stop. However, they will be in full force again come August. Southern California law enforcement officials will be conducting an 18 day campaign beginning in August and ending Labor Day weekend.
