Super Bowl DUIs in California

|

Super Bowl Sunday, I think is fair to say, is America’s unofficial holiday. Whether you’re a Broncos fan or a Seahawks fan, there’s one thing that both sides can agree on: beer on Super Bowl Sunday is about as customary as stuffing on Thanksgiving. And like other holidays, law enforcement will be out in full force looking for football fans who take to the road after having too much to drink…with good reason.

In fact, AAA says that drunk-driver-involved collisions in California increase 75 percent on Super Bowl Sunday compared to other Sundays in January and February.

According to a 10-year analysis by AAA, Super Bowl Sunday is responsible for 276 injury and fatal crashes in California. According to the report, Los Angeles County jumps up to 55 percent.

The last time AAA conducted this analysis, in 2004, it found a 41 percent increase in DUI collisions versus other January and February Sundays. Either people are driving drunk more often nowadays or law enforcement efforts are increasing. Personally, I think it’s the latter.

Nonetheless, be on the lookout for DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols throughout Southern California this weekend.

Plan ahead. Get a cab or find yourself a designated driver. Crashing on your buddy’s couch, as is often an option for Friday or Saturday night drinking, may not be such a good idea since the following day is Monday.

Happy Super Bowl Sunday!
