If Memorial Day marks the unofficial kickoff to the summer season, Labor Day is the unofficial end of the summer season. While some may miss the warm beach weather, others are looking forward to some cooler temperatures. Either way, I think we’re all glad to have a three-day weekend (unless you’re one of the unfortunate souls who has to work on Monday, September 5th). But where there’s a three-day weekend, there is also the increased in drunk drivers on the road.
Law enforcement is well aware of the fact that people have a tendency to drink on long holiday weekends such as this and will be out in full force.
“Over the past three years, there have been 7,048 DUI-related traffic collisions in Los Angeles, which have resulted in 60 fatalities and 2,818 injuries,” according to a statement by the Los Angeles Police Department. “If you are planning a gathering or celebration with alcohol included, or if you are out on the town, plan ahead and designate a non-drinking sober driver. A DUI or drug-impaired arrest can costs up to $10,000 or even more, including time in jail, the loss or your driver license and high insurance rates.”
Here is a list of the scheduled checkpoints and saturation patrols scheduled for Friday, September 2nd:
– DUI/License Checkpoint at La Brea Ave. and Melrose Ave. from 8pm to 2am
– DUI/License Checkpoint at Olympic Blvd. and Westlake Ave. from 8pm to 2am
– DUI/License Checkpoint at Sepulveda Blvd. and Parthenia St. from 8pm to 2am
– DUI/License Checkpoint at Florence Ave. and Main St. from 6pm to 12am
– Saturation patrol in the Pacific Area from 5pm to 1am
– Saturation patrol in the Wilshire Area from 5pm to 1am
On Saturday, September 3rd, a DUI/License Checkpoint is scheduled for La Brea Ave. and 29th St. from 8pm to 2am.
On Sunday, September 4th, DUI saturation patrol is scheduled for the Mission Area from 5pm to 1am.
I don’t always say this, but heed the advice of the Los Angeles Police Department above. Plan to take public transportation, designate a sober driver and ensure that they actually remain sober, stay the night, or simply don’t drink.
