As we prepare for the holiday season, the California Highway Patrol will be preparing a series of checkpoints now through the end of the year. Their first series of checkpoints started early Wednesday of Thanksgiving week on major streets and intersections spread out over several counties. Los Angeles County, Orange County, and the Inland Empire all reported checkpoints.
The goal of checkpoints is to discourage people from getting behind the wheel after they have had a few drinks. CHP has received additional grant money to support the checkpoint efforts. This means that there will be more checkpoint locations in the weeks to come.
In 2015, 940 drunk-drivers were arrested statewide with 17 drunk driving related fatalities. This year, 798 drunk drivers were arrested while there were 36 drunk driving fatalities statewide. While the amount of people arrested for drunk-driving decreased, the number of fatalities more than doubled in size.
You can certainly be expecting more reinforcement in the month of December. Checkpoints will be starting as early as the first week of December and are expected to run through the New Year.
