Looking for a free costume for Halloween? Local law enforcement agencies are handing out free inmate outfits for those who are arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Ok, so that’s not the costume you were looking for, but it may be the outfit you have to wear if you are caught driving under the influence. Law enforcement agencies throughout Southern California will be out in full force with checkpoints and saturation patrols looking for drivers whom they can make wear that inmate outfit.
Halloween marks one of the holidays where drunk drivers are more apt to hit the streets following hitting the bars and costume parties where alcoholic concoctions are served. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 43 percent of people killed in vehicle crashes on Halloween night between 2009 and 2013 were crashes involving a drunk driver. What’s more, during that same period on Halloween night, a total of 119 people have been killed in vehicle collisions.
Don’t be forced to wear an inmate outfit this Halloween. Take steps to avoid a California DUI this Halloween:
1.) Get a designated driver. Just make sure that your designated driver is, in fact, staying sober. Often, designated drivers do drink. They just don’t drink as much as their passengers. This is not a designated driver. Not only are they putting their passengers’ lives in danger, they are at risk of getting arrested for DUI.
2.) Use public transportation. Cabs and buses are no longer the only options. Transportation companies like Uber, Sidecar, and Lyft provide holiday partygoers with the option of taking a ride privately owned, often luxury, vehicle.
3.) Plan to stay the night. Whether at a hotel within walking distance or at the host’s house, staying the night to avoid driving home can help prevent a DUI. Remember, though, that it is possible to still be drunk the following morning depending on how much alcohol was consumed, what time the person went to bed, and what time the person drove home.
4.) Don’t drink. While it may be the least attractive option, it is the only surefire way to avoid a California DUI.
