While the numbers on drunk driving incidences over the New Year’s weekend are not in quite yet, the California Highway Patrol has released the numbers on drunk driving arrests over the Christmas weekend.
The CHP’s Maximum Enforcement Period over the Christmas holiday weekend was conducted from December 23rd through the end of Monday, December 26th.
Throughout California during the Maximum Enforcement Period, there were 535 DUI arrests. This is down from the 608 DUI arrests during the same period in 2015.
Although the number of DUI arrests were down from last year, the number of fatal collisions increased. Over the Christmas holiday weekend, there were 16 fatal collisions within the CHP’s jurisdiction which claimed the lives of 17 people. Only 15 fatalities were reported during the same time in 2015.
Outside of CHP jurisdiction, three people were killed in traffic collisions in incorporated cities.
When it comes to driving under the influence and collisions related to drunk driving, no number is a good number and unless there is none, there can always be improvement.
