About three weeks ago, a teenage driver from Compton made the poor decision to drive a car while heavily intoxicated, resulting in the death of his passenger.
On July 18th at approximately 2 a.m., Jorge Angel Perez, 19, was traveling northbound in a 2007 Ford Mustang at a dangerously high speed. As he approached the Highway 126 interchange, he attempted to maneuver around a slower moving vehicle that was driving ahead of him. Unfortunately, the teenage driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to run off the highway. The Mustang flipped while crashing down an embankment and eventually landed on its roof.
One of the passengers, Florencio Calderon, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He was ejected from the front seat of the car and suffered serious injuries. After paramedics arrived, they confirmed that he sadly had died at the scene of the crash. Perez and two additional teenage passengers suffered moderate injuries and were transported to Ventura County Medical Center for treatment.
Authorities later arrested Perez on suspicion of felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter. He was booked into county jail and has since been released on bail.
Usually, the courts consider first-time DUIs to be misdemeanors. However, because Perez’s actions led to the death of his passenger and the endangerment of minors, a prosecutor may try to seek maximum penalties against him.
