On Saturday, November 15th at approximately 9:10 p.m., an alleged drunk driver caused an accident that claimed the life of his two-year old passenger. According to investigative reports, the crash occurred in Palmdale, California on Avenue P east of 240th St. The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Devon Dorsey, was traveling westbound in a 2006 Ford Fusion at a dangerously accelerated speed.
Unfortunately, Dorsey lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a raised dirt embankment. The vehicle overturned, and the young boy was ejected from the car into the street. California Highway Patrol reported that Dorsey had been driving intoxicated with 23-year-old Shonterra Dillard and two of her children during the time of the incident. The two-year old victim Michael Bonner unfortunately did not survive the incident. When emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they transported the surviving victims to a nearby hospital to receive medical treatment.
However, Dorsey sustained only minor injuries from the crash. Authorities later booked him on suspicion of driving while under the influence. He currently faces one felony count each of:
- DUI
- Gross vehicular manslaughterÂ
- Two felony counts of child abuse under circumstances or conditions likely to cause great bodily injury or death
- One misdemeanor count of driving when privilege suspended or revoked.
DUI Suspect May Face Maximum Sentence
Dorsey faces a possible maximum sentence of more than 13 years in state prison if convicted. At the moment, he is being held on a set bail of $100,000.
The charges Dorsey faces are among the harshest penalties a DUI offender can receive. Prosecutors will likely seek to ensure he gets charged for every felony count.
