A family is mourning the loss of their 12-year-old daughter and sister Yarely Jasso-Gomez after an accident on Sunday, July 19, 2020. She was tragically killed in an alleged DUI hit-and-run in Modesto, California.
The accident happened approximately at 7 p.m. when Yarely and her family of four were struck by a vehicle that sped through a red light. Police identified the driver as repeat DUI offender Kelley Ball. Reportedly, Ball was traveling northbound in a 2006 Jeep Laredo when she slammed into the Gomez family as they were making a left turn.
Ball then ran away from the scene of the crime barefoot into a nearby Walmart and attempted to steal a pair of shoes and a face mask. Police eventually found and arrested her.
The entire Gomez family sustained injuries from the impact of the sudden crash. Sadly, Yarely succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 15-year-old brother sustained severe fractures to his arms and legs and was airlifted to a Bay Area hospital to undergo surgery. Her father suffered a head injury and internal fractures and was transported to a local hospital alongside her mother who suffered minor injuries.
A witness to the crime claimed that Ball nearly hit him prior to the deadly crash. He stated that “she drove into traffic, like there was nobody driving. Like she had the road to herself.”
Ball remains in custody with bail set at $2.2 million. She is facing charges of murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, felony hit-and-run, and vandalism and felony DUI.
