Last month, tragedy struck in Merced, California, leaving one juvenile dead and many others injured. And now a million-dollar warrant is out for his arrest.
On May 2nd, 2020, authorities were dispatched to the scene of the crime at approximately 9:30 p.m. According to reports, the suspect identified as 21-year-old Osvaldo Ibarra of Turlock was driving seven occupants in a 2002 Toyota Camry—a car model limited to a five-person occupancy. Two of the passengers rode on the laps of the rear passengers without seatbelts.
Ibarra was traveling southbound at a dangerously high speed when he lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road. The Toyota then overturned multiple times before coming to a stop on the dirt shoulder.
The Toyota came to rest on the driver’s side, causing two juvenile male passengers to be trapped inside. Due to the impact, Ibarra and a juvenile female passenger were unfortunately ejected from the vehicle onto the road, left to lie in dusty and dark conditions.
Meanwhile, a 20-year-old Delhi man driving a 2001 Chevy S10 southbound could not see the young girl lying in the road (due to the weather conditions) and struck her. The girl sustained major injuries from both collisions.
A $1,000,000 Warrant for His Arrest
When emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they carefully extracted the passengers trapped inside the Toyota vehicle. One of the male passengers sustained severe injuries from the fatal crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The emergency personnel transported the remaining survivors of the crash, including Ibarra, to Memorial Medical Center and Doctor’s Medical Center.
The driver of the Chevy fortunately did not sustain any injuries from the incident. However, he remained at the scene to assist with the investigation.
CHP suspected Ibarra had been driving while under the influence. Although they made an initial arrest, they had to release him soon after due to the extent of his injuries.
Ibarra has since then been put on the Merced Area Crime Stoppers most wanted list. Authorities reportedly placed a warrant with a total of $1,000,000 on him. When arrested, he will face felony charges of murder, gross vehicle manslaughter, child endangerment, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
