The Fresno County District Attorney’s office announced that the driver in a fatal crash that occurred over the weekend in their county is facing criminal charges.
According to the California Highway Patrol, 31-year-old Joey Barron was traveling at a high speed the morning of January 2nd, 2021 when he lost control of his vehicle. Reportedly, his vehicle collided into a dirt embankment along the right shoulder of Highway 168 and Shields Avenue. The impact of the crash caused Barron’s vehicle to overturn, badly injuring all of the occupants.
Sadly, Barron’s passenger, identified by authorities as 30-year-old Andres Romero, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Barron also sustained major injuries, and emergency personnel transported him to a nearby hospital to receive extensive medical treatment.
Shortly after, CHP began an investigation into the contributing factors of this deadly crash. Officers found signs of intoxication from alcohol and drugs, leading them to believe that intoxication was the primary cause of the incident. Investigative reports alleged that the suspect had been arrested and convicted once before on a drunk driving charge. He was also found to be driving on a suspended license at the time of the accident.
Consequently, Barron now faces several charges including:
- Murder
- Driving under the combined influence of alcohol and a drug causing great bodily injury
- Gross vehicular manslaughter while impaired
- Driving under the influence of alcohol causing great bodily injury, and
- Driving on a suspended license.
If convicted of the charges and allegations against him, Barron can face up to 15 years to life in prison.
